Monday 22nd January 2007
It came as a great shock to hear of the sudden death of our dear friend and Vice Commodore of Eyott Sailing Club, Kay Darby.
Kay died on Thursday morning, at home and very suddenly. I understand that a blood clot stopped her heart and she was gone within a few seconds.
Kay will be greatly missed by all at Eyott SC; she was easy to talk to, competitive on the water and a friend to all the children who came to the club. Sailing with Brian she regularly collected race trophies as well as “crew” trophies for which she would beat off many younger upstarts who thought they knew it all. At social events, Kay was always happy to bring a dish, cook 50 jacket potatoes or sell the never-ending supply of raffle tickets. With her on your team for the quiz nights you felt as if you may have a chance of winning, as her general knowledge was broad and deep.
Kay will always be remembered for her hard work, along with Jean Mazzey, in 2005 when they managed to finish and publish the book of Eyott Sailing Club history. They made it happen on time and within the budget as well as securing sponsorship from various outside groups.
Away from the club Kay was involved with Rotary and still taught children private lessons. She was always busy and seemed to have an endless supply of energy. Her death has come as a great shock to all.
I am sure I speak for all the members of Eyott sailing club and others along the river that knew Kay to say that we will miss her and that our thoughts are with her husband Brian and son Nigel.
